Coping with extreme heat

July 29th, 2011 in News

Callaway County residents use a variety of ways to help cope with recent heat that has pushed indexes into the 110 range.

Jim Kivett had one of the hottest jobs in the city Thursday. At 3 p.m. Thursday, he was standing in the middle of the intersection of Westminster Avenue and 2nd Street in Fulton directing traffic away from paving construction at the intersection of Westminster and 4th Street.

Kivett works for McGruder Paving of Troy.

"I have a cool soda to help keep me cool. But it is really hot out here. I've been out here since 6 a.m. today," Kivett said.

Kivett said he has a job that deals with excessive heat frequently and he has become accustomed to high heat. "We are not paving today. That's when it gets really hot. The asphalt is 300 degrees," Kivett said.
