Three Callaway County post offices at Portland, Tebbetts, and Steedman are on a nationwide list of 3,700 small post offices targeted for possible closing by the U.S. Postal Service.

"Our customer's habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business," said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.

The postmasters of all three Callaway County post offices said they had heard about the decision but they know very few details at this point.

No final decisions have been made yet on closing any of the 3,700 small post offices that were revealed for the first time Tuesday by the Postal Service.

Dee Pfeiffer, substitute postmaster at Steedman, said questionnaires will be circulated in the community by the Postal Service to help determine whether to close or keep open the post offices targeted for possible closing.
