Weather closes Callaway schools today

As a snow storm moved through the area late Wednesday Fulton Public Schools, North Callaway R-I, South Callaway R-II and New Bloomfield R-III all called off classes for today by 8:30 p.m. because of hazardous road conditions.

Fulton Superintendent Jacque Cowherd acknowledged that was earlier than the district usually calls off school, but attributed that decision to road conditions and the county's new plowing policy.

"Callaway County put out a new policy that road crews stop at 6 and start at 6. Right now the roads are not clear and if it continues to snow like this, I don't think it's going to be clear for our buses when they leave (in the morning)," Cowherd said. "I always hate to call early based on a forecast, but I can't imagine it getting better.

"It is a little earlier than usual, but hopefully that will help parents."
