Ladybirds down rival Lady Bulldogs

KINGDOM CITY - Ladybirds sophomore guard Jaida Gray poured in a game-high 15 points as North Callaway continued its hot start to the season. The Ladybirds prevailed 43-29 over the rival South Callaway Bulldogs in Mid-MIssouri Conference play on Monday night.

Freshman guard Elaine Brinker added 12 of her own for the Ladybirds, who hit five 3-pointers and 8-of-12 free throws as a team. North Callaway improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in MMC play.

"We were very patient and were able to get some good shots," North Callaway head coach Jack Peace said.

Sophomore guard Taylor Howard led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Junior forward Michaela Nolting scored nine while South Callaway (2-2, 0-1 MMC) connected on 10-of-13 from the charity stripe.

"We just got out-toughened tonight," Lady Bulldogs head coach Jim Donnelly said. "Our effort was nowhere close to where it needed to be tonight and until our girls learn how to be tougher, this will be the result."

The Ladybirds junior varsity team notched a 36-33 win over South Callaway on Monday.

Freshman guard Brittany Vaughn led North Callaway (1-2) with 13 points, and freshman center Danielle Cassidy had 10 points. Sophomore guard Maddie Neal dropped in 12 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs, now (0-3).

North Callaway hosts Wellsville at 6 p.m. South Callaway plays at Harrisburg starting at 5 p.m. on Friday.

COLUMBIA - Freshman forward Sam Christensen led the Hornets with 10 points and six rebounds in a win over Fr. Tolton on Monday. Freshman guards Ricky Dawson and Austin Wilson each threw in nine points.

Fulton (4-2) plays at Kirksville on Friday.
