William Woods splits home weekend doubleheader

The Owls six game winning streak came to an end with a loss to Park University in the back half of a home-ending doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. William Woods won the first game by a score of 9-1 before dropping the second contest 3-1 to fall to 29-13 and 16-6 in the AMC.

Senior pitcher Logan Lawson went the distance in game one, scattering four hits and one run in seven innings. He struck out nine batters on 111 pitches. Senior right fielder L.J. Watson and junior first baseman Derek McCawley each had a pair of hits and a couple of RBI. William Woods scored two in the first, four in the second and three in the third, racking up 12 base hits.

Each squad had four hits in the back half of play, with the Owls getting a single from freshman catcher Derek Fletcher in the bottom of the third inning. But Park got three runs on two hits in visitor half of the sixth inning, taking the lead on when right fielder Ricky Alfonso scored on a passed ball thrown by senior reliever Jason Boyd. Freshman Adam Brush took the loss, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up two earned runs while striking out seven batters.

The two teams will finish their series and the season on Tuesday with a conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

William Woods softball opens AMC tournament as No. 6 seed

The Owls start their march towards an AMC tournament championship on Friday in Lebanon, Ill. The Owls (24-19, 8-8 AMC) will play McKendree University in a best two-of-three series in the opening round of play starting at 2 p.m.

McKendree swept the season series of William Woods with home victories of 2-1 and 7-5 on March 28.

Westminster baseball gets conference sweep

ST. LOUIS - The Blue Jays got walk-off wins in St. Louis on Saturday afternoon. Westminster downed St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Blackburn College by scores of 5-4 and 4-3 in a Saturday doubleheader. Junior Nick Hoag knocked in junior Mike Young for the game-winning run in the bottom half of the seventh inning for the game one victory.

Senior VJ Reynolds hit a one-out solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning in the night game to help the Blue Jays get the sweep. The took game one by a score of 14-1 on Friday evening. Junior Gary Johnson got the complete game allowing one earned run on six hits.

Westminster (15-14, 10-6 SLIAC) hosts Principia in a SLIAC doubleheader tonight starting at 5 p.m.

William Woods girls golf wins eighth straight AMC Champioship

ALTON, Ill. - The Owls racked up a two-day team score of 626 to best the University of St. Francis in the AMC/NAIA Unaffiliated Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Spencer T. Olin Golf Course. The Owls beat St. Francis by 59 strokes to take the title.

Junior Ashlee Daly was the individual tournament champion with scores of 79 and 75 to finish with a total of 154. Jada Bennington came in third with a score of 158 while freshman Jamie Palermo (159), sophomore Lindsey Johnson (160) and sophomore Naomi Starr (163) came in fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively. All five were named to the NAIA-All Grouping team and the all-AMC team.

Bennington was honored as the AMC Conference Player of the Year, Palermo was named the Conference Freshman of the Year. Coach Barry Doty won the NAIA Grouping Coach and AMC Coach of the Year award. The Owls travel to Greenville, Tenn., for the NAIA National Championships starting May 14.

North Callaway baseball scheduling updates

The Mid-Missouri Conference game between North Callaway and South Callaway in Auxvasse scheduled for Monday has been rescheduled to Wednesday at 5 p.m. with only the varsity team's playing. The Thunderbirds game from last Thursday against Moberly has officially been canceled.

Fulton boys golf takes second in pre-district quadrangle

The Hornets posted a team score of 172 to finish 13 strokes behind Eugene at Tanglewood Golf Course on Monday afternoon. Eugene won the event with a score of 161, while host New Bloomfield had a total of 223. Russellville, the fourth team, did not have enough players to have a team score.

Sophomore Josh King was the low man for Fulton with a score of 42, followed by junior Glenn Ripsch's 42. Senior Jordan Kelley ended the day with a 44 and junior JoeRyan Anderson had a 47. Donovan Doerhoff of Eugene was the overall medalist with a final score of 47.

Fulton's junior varsity team finished in second palce with a 228. Freshman Brendan Hodges shot a 51 on the day.

"All things considered with the weather and such, they did all right," Hornets coach Pat Kelley said. "We'll obviously have to shoot better on Wednesday in districts and it was really good competition for us."

The Hornets start Class 3 District 5 play at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Clinton Country Club.

South Callaway boys and girls track finish top ten in Brookfield

BROOKFIELD - Senior Bryan Lechner notched four top five finishes in the Brookfield Invitational last Thursday afternoon. The boys team accumulated 36 points to come in seventh place and the girls racked up 15 points to come in eight place.

Lechner took home first place in the long jump with a distance of 20-feet-2 inches and leapt 38-feet-11 1/2 inches in the triple jump to finish in fourth place.

He took top honors in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.98 seconds and a second place time of 42.09 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles. The boys' 4x800 meter team - comprised of sophomores Kyle Toney, Nick DeBrodie and Trent Hosenfelt and junior Cody Waterson - came in sixth place in a time of 9 minutes and 43.4 seconds.

The girls 4x100 meter team came in 8th place, crossing the finish line in a time of 58.02 seconds. Sophomores Jaeri and Serina Booher, Jenna Boulger and freshman Taylor Howard made up that Lady Bulldogs team. Serina Booher took sixth place in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 18.7 seconds and eighth place in 300-meter hurdles with a finish of 56.03 seconds.

Howard finished the 400-meter run in 1 minute and 4 seconds to take third place and 28.41 seconds in the 200-meter to take second place. South Callaway hosts their invitational meet Friday at 4 p.m.

New Bloomfield track teams compete at Fatima Blue and Gold Meet

FATIMA - The Wildcats boys and girls track teams finished in 12th and 10th place respectively at the Fatima Blue and Gold meet last Wednesday afternoon. The boys result was 12th of 14 teams while the girls finished in 10th place out of 13 schools.

Colton Carrier had a pair of top five finishes in the triple jump and 100-meter dashes. Carrier leapt 37-feet-10 1/2 inches to come in third place and ran the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.84 seconds to come in fourth place.

On the girls side, Chelsea Wiler ended her 110-meter hurdle jaunt in a time of 18.18 seconds for a fifth place finish. Ashtin Withers also had a fifth place result, finishing the 1600-meter run in five minutes and 54 seconds. Christina Mackey got a pair of top five field finishes in the shot put and discus throws. Mackey's shot put toss of 31-feet-9 inches to come in fifth place and tossed the discus 104 feet even to come in third place.

Madyn Jennings set personal bests in the 100-meter dash (18 seconds) and the 3200-meter run (17 minutes 12 seconds), Nick Spurgeon's personal records came in the 800 (2 minutes 38 seconds) and 1600-meter runs (5 minutes 44 seconds) and Toni Schafer finished her personal best 100-meter dash in 18.30 seconds.

The Wildcats meet at Hallsville schedule for Monday was canceled due to rain so they'll next take the track on Friday at the South Callaway Invitational starting at 4 p.m.
