Lady Hornets top Mexico in NCMC play

October 22nd, 2010 in News

Senior outside hitter Haley Clark finished with nine kills Thursday night as the Fulton Lady Hornets volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 25-9, 25-8 NCMC victory over rival Mexico.

With the win at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium, Fulton improved to 25-8 overall and ended at 9-1 in the North Central Missouri Conference. Pending the outcome of Thursday night's Boonville-Hannibal matchup, the Lady Hornets will either win their second straight NCMC title outright or will share it with Hannibal.

Fulton split its two meetings with Hannibal this season, while sweeping Boonville. Results were not available from the Boonville-Hannibal game at deadline.

"Of course, I want us to win the championship outright, but I can live with sharing the title because Hannibal has a tough team," Lady Hornets head coach Megan Herrick said.

Sophomore right-side hitter Rachelle Miller added six kills for Fulton on Thursday night, while senior outside hitter Meghan Davis recorded seven digs and four aces.

Sophomore setter Melissa Hoerber also supplied 23 assists for the Lady Hornets, followed by senior libero Emily Wefenstette with seven digs. Senior defensive specialist Keeley Wisdom also contributed five aces.

"We played our game and kept the ball clean," Herrick said. "It was important for us going into district play that we have the mindset that we're going to execute on every play.

"We fine-tuned what we had been working on; the girls did a good job."

Fulton's junior varsity completed its season with an 8-10 record after a 25-15, 25-9 triumph over Mexico.

Sophomore middle hitter Anna Raepple -- a foreign-exchange student -- topped the Lady Hornets with five kills, while sophomore setter Allie Pierce chipped in with 13 digs.

Sophomore defensive specialist Kennedy Bailey logged five aces and six digs, while freshman setter Hayley Tobias had six assists and four digs. Sophomore outside hitter Billie Klutts tallied four assists.

Fulton is the No. 1 seed for next week's Class 3, District 9 Tournament. The Lady Hornets earned a first-round bye and will face either No. 4 School of the Osage or No. 5 Eldon in the semifinals on Wednesday night.
