Lady Hornets' softball season ends in district semifinal loss

The Fulton Lady Hornets softball team's season came to an end in a 7-6 loss to Southern Boone in the semifinals of the Class 3, District 8 Tournament on Thursday night at the Fulton High School athletic complex.

No. 5 seed Fulton owned a 6-1 lead before No. 1 Southern Boone rallied for five runs in the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings. The Lady Eagles then manufactured the winning run in the eighth.

The Lady Hornets completed their season with a 9-17 record.

"We played great; we scored early and often," Fulton head coach Laura Dooley said. "We needed three outs in the seventh to take the win and just couldn't finish.

"I am proud of the way the girls played and although we lost, it was a good game."

Senior Hannah Braun went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two runs scored for the Lady Hornets, while sophomore Mckayla Ebersole was also 2-for-4 with a run batted in and a run scored. Junior Rachel Washington finished 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and senior Deserae Frazier went 2-for-4.

Freshman starter Autumn Lungstrum threw a complete game in taking the loss for Fulton. Lungstrum allowed seven runs -- six earned -- on nine hits, struck out three and issued six walks.

Luebbert medal at Helias

JEFFERSON CITY -- Freshmen Taylor Howard and Abbi Luebbert both medalled to guide the South Callaway varsity girls' cross country team at the Helias Invitational on Saturday.

Howard came in fourth among small-school runners and 16th overall with a time of 23 minutes, 6 seconds. Luebbert took sixth in the small-school division and 21st overall in 23:19.

Also placing for the Lady Bulldogs were sophomore Serina Booher, 28th small-school and 53rd overall in 28:20, and sophomore Jaerie Booher, 31st small-school and 59th overall in 30:23.

Placing for South Callaway in the varsity boys' race were freshman Tristan Peneston, 17th small-school and 43rd overall in 20:15, and sophomore Glen Healy, 32nd small-school and 65th overall in 22:03.

South Callaway competes in the Borgia Invitational at Washington at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16.

FMS volleyball team goes

1-1-1 at Warrenton Invite

WARRENTON -- The Lady Hornets won a match, lost one and tied the other in pool play at the Warrenton Invitational on Saturday.

Fulton Middle School opened with a 21-14, 21-15 triumph over Winfield, followed by a 21-11 and 21-15 loss to Warrenton. The Lady Hornets then closed out play in a 22-20, 25-27 tie with Wright City.

FMS (2-8-1) plays at Centralia at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

FMS' Alcorn, Beck medal

at Capital City Invitational

JEFFERSON CITY -- Eli Alcorn and Libby Beck earned medalist honors Friday as the Hornets and Lady Hornets cross country teams closed out their season at the Capital City Invitational.

Alcorn placed 11th in 10 minutes, 1 second as the Fulton Middle School boys came in ninth overall. Beck logged a 15th-place time of 11:13 to direct the FMS girls to an eighth-place team finish.

Other place-finishers for the Hornets included Conner Foote, 54th in 11:44; Devin Wiebelhaus, 56th in 11:52; Jacob Garnett, 68th in 12:29; Kyle Johnson, 84th in 14:11, and Chris Banks, 86th in 15:26.

Also placing for the Lady Hornets were Brooke Baysinger, 48th in 12:26; Rachel Quick, 66th in 12:48; Katie Herzing, 69th in 12:49; Megan Coleman, 78th in 13:27; Bethany Libbert, 94th in 14:11, and Tiffany Hartley-Barton, 108th in 15:13.
