Blue Jays mens' hoops split at Snyder Classic

The Blue Jays were not able to put together consecutive wins, losing 74-60 to Augsburg in the first game of the Snyder Classic on Friday evening. Westminster shot 49 percent from the field against Augsburg (3-0). The Blue Jays were down 16 points at halftime but managed to outscore their opponents by two points in the second half.

Augsburg shot 55 percent for the game hitting 26-of-47 shots from the field, including 10-of-16 three pointers. The Blue Jays got 20 points from senior guard Jake Vislay, one of two Westminster players in double figures.

Westminster finished the weekend off on a strong note with an 85-67 win over Presentation College in Saturday's Snyder Classic Consolation game. Senior forward Justin Gilmore was the high scorer for Westminster (2-2), which had five players in double figures. Gilmore scored 14 points while junior guard Dan Hohenstein and sophomore guard Skylar Tolson each had 13.

Vislay added 10 points of his own for the Blue Jays, who went 32-for-62 from the field for a mark of 52 percent. Westminster travels to St. Louis to take on Fontbonne in their first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

ROLLA - The Lady Blue Jays were outrebounded 46-32 and shot just 31 percent from the field in the loss to Division II opponent Missouri S&T on Saturday. Junior guard Heather Letourneau scored 10 points for the Lady Blue Jays, who trailed by 16 at halftime.

Junior Rachel Backes guard Rachel Backes added nine points and senior Kenna Cornelson had eight points off the bench. The Lady Blue Jays (2-3) open SLIAC play against Fontbonne at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

MEXICO- The T-Birds opened up the season with a loss to Moberly in the first round of the Mexico Tournament on Monday night. Guard Justin Menard scored 12 points for North Callaway.

The two teams were tied at 15 at halftime but Moberly outscored North Callaway 20-6 in the third quarter. The T-Birds play the loser of the West Jr. High/Hannibal game at 7:30 on Wednesday.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY - The Lady Hornets opened up their 2010-2011 season with a loss in the first round of the Montgomery County tournament on Monday night. Sophomore shooting guard Bailey Mitchell led Fulton with 14 points on the night, including a 4-for-6 night from behind the three point line.

Junior forward Cori Hamilton joined Mitchell in double figures with ten points on the night. Senior forward Meghan Davis scored six and junior guard Rachel Washington had four points.

The Lady Hornets will play either Wellsville or Hermann at 4:30 on Wednesday in tournament play.
