JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri House has passed a bill that would restrict where and how plaintiffs can be joined in certain civil cases.
Approved Thursday by a 104-47 vote, the bill would affect how people band together for tort claims. Those cases deal with wrongdoings and injuries, such as the sale of shoddy products. The proposal targets out-of-state claims, although Missourians would also be affected.
The proposal's sponsor, Republican Rep. Glen Kolkmeyer of Odessa, says the change would reduce the number of out-of-state cases filed in St. Louis. Opponents say the change could make it difficult for injured people to successfully sue.
The bill now heads to the Senate.
