Lawmaker raises concerns about heat at St. Louis jail

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A Democratic state lawmaker from St. Louis is raising concerns about conditions at a city jail, especially during the extremely hot weather.

State Rep. Joshua Peters told KMOV-TV that he worries conditions at the St. Louis Medium Security Institution could be unconstitutional. He says inmates have several complaints, in addition to the heat. He says some inmates claim they have been bitten by rodents, and others have cited mold.

The jail has no air-conditioning. St. Louis Corrections Commissioner Dale Glass says he is developing a heat safety plan. The cafeteria and other common areas are serving as cooling stations, and he says 24-hour medical help is available for any heat-related illnesses.

High temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees several days this week in St. Louis.
