Man arrested in Missouri after 1 killed, 2 wounded in Kansas

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) - A man opened fire at a crowded Kansas bar, killing one man and wounding two others before he was arrested in Missouri hours later, police said Thursday about an attack that some witnesses suggested had racial overtones.

The Kansas City Star reported that the suspect uttered racial slurs before he opened fire, citing witnesses at the shooting.

Police declined to provide specifics about the attack, including the names and races of the suspect and victims and whether race may have been a factor. The FBI referred calls to the Olathe Police Department, which said it would discuss the case in further detail at a 4 p.m. Thursday news conference.

The shooting happened at around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday while people were watching the Kansas-TCU basketball game at Austins Bar and Grill in the Kansas City suburb of Olathe, said Olathe Police Sgt. Logan Bonney. He said one of the victims died at a hospital, and the conditions of the surviving victims weren't immediately known.

Police helicopters helped with the search before the 51-year-old suspect was taken into custody around 12:40 a.m. Thursday at an Applebee's about 70 miles to the southeast in Clinton, Missouri, authorities said.

An Olathe man the same age as the suspect was booked into the Henry County Jail in Missouri on Thursday on a preliminary charge of first-degree murder. Police would not say if he is the same person.

Assistant Clinton Police Chief Sonny Lynch said an Applebee's bartender summoned police to the bar where the man was drinking because he said he'd been involved in a shooting. The unarmed suspect was taken into custody and interviewed by detectives from Olathe.

"He mentioned he had been involved in a shooting and we went out there and picked him up," Lynch said. "There really wasn't much more to it than that. There was no racial overtone down here."

Phone calls to the Olathe restaurant where the shooting happened and the Applebee's in Clinton rang unanswered.

GPS-maker Garmin, which is headquartered in Olathe, said in an email to employees that two of the three victims work or worked for the company, including the one who was killed. The company didn't immediately respond to requests for further details.
