"If motorists encounter a closed road, we remind them to never move or drive around the barriers," said MoDOT Central District Engineer David Silvester. "You never know what is underneath the surface when there is standing water. It only takes 12 inches of moving water to move a small car. Those signs and barriers are there for your safety and protection."

Silvester added that drivers should also use extra caution when driving on wet roads. Slow down to avoid skidding and hydroplaning, leave extra stopping space, and always turn headlights on whenever wipers are needed, he advised.
