National Weather Service warns of flash flood danger

The National Weather Service in St. Louis has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Cole County, southern Boone County, southern Callaway County, Osage County, eastern Moniteau County and Gasconade County until 3:30 p.m.

Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area during the 9 a.m. hour. Up to two inches of rain had already fallen.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Columbia, Jefferson City, California, Ashland, Holts Summit, Owensville, Hermann, Linn, Columbia Regional Airport, Belle, Wardsville, St. Martins, Taos, Russellville, Bland, Freeburg, Rosebud, Chamois, Westphalia and Jamestown. This also includes Rock Bridge State Park, Clarks Hill/Norton Historic Site, Jewell Cemetery Historic Site, and Jefferson Landing Historic Site.

When encountering flooded roads, turn around, don`t drown. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

In addition, a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 p.m. for all of Boone and Callaway counties, extending into northeast Missouri. A Flash Flood Watch is advanced notice that conditions are favorable that may lead to flash flooding. People in the Watch area, especially in flood prone areas, should use this time to make preparations just in case.
