An art exhibit that focuses on memory, play, ritual and the dissolving boundaries of waking life and dreams is coming to William Woods University.
"Bearing The Light," featuring the work of Warrensburg-based artist Sarah Nguyen addressing the balance of abstract and representational forms to sever the connection between shape and meaning, will run on the WWU campus for four weeks beginning today at the Mildred Cox Gallery. Admission to Cox Gallery is free.
A painter whose work has appeared in solo and group exhibits as well as national and international publications, Nguyen uses folklore, reverence, the refinement of nature and observance of daily life as the main concepts behind her work.
"Using modern mediums and techniques, I render each subject and then allow forces such as gravity, chemical interaction, and random chance to take over and dissolve the forms," Nguyen said. "This reflects the occasional dissolving of between self and other that we experience when engaged in universal human activities such as play, ritual and art."
Nguyen serves as an art instructor at the University of Central Missouri, as well as the art editor of Pleiades Magazine and Pleiades Press. She received her BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA in Painting from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
The Bearing The Light exhibit will be on display at the Cox Gallery in the Gladys Woods Kemper Center for the Arts on the William Woods campus. The show will run until Oct. 19, with an opening reception from 4-6 p.m. Monday.
Cox Gallery is open 9 a.m.6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
