Illinois woman dies in Callaway County crash

A young Washington Park, Illinois, woman died in a crash Sunday near Kingdom City, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Ariel Perkins, 21, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident, Michael R. Smith, 25, of Olathe, Kansas, was uninjured. He was wearing a safety device.

His passenger, J-Von Patten, also of Olathe, suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to University Hospital. He was not using a safety device at the time of the crash, troopers reported. A hospital spokesperson indicated Tuesday the hospital did not have a patient by that name as of Tuesday.

The MSHP Troop F crash report stated the crash occurred when Perkins made a U-turn using an emergency turn-around. As her 2015 Ford Focus entered eastbound I-70, it was struck by Smith's 2013 Chrysler 200, which was driving in the passing lane.

Both vehicles ran off the roadway's right side and came to a stop.

The Ford Focus was totalled, while the Chrysler was extensively damaged. Despite wearing a safety device, Perkins received fatal injuries.

This is Troop F's first September fatality and its 48th for 2018, the crash report stated.
