On Thursday, South Callaway Middle School's sixth-grade science students showcased their understanding of the properties and structure of matter at the end of a problem-based learning unit focused on the elements of the periodic table.

Science teacher Michelle Dooley challenged her students to create a superhero endowed with the characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of an assigned element or compound. During the showcase, students answered the driving question: If you could create a superhero using any element of the periodic table, which element would you use and why?

The students displayed a combination of 3-D models and other visuals during a presentation that included challenging questions from area experts.
