Memorial Gardens will be the site of a luminary candle observance on Nov. 10.

For 12 years, volunteers from the community have come together to place and light luminary candles at Callaway Memorial Gardens in Fulton.

The lights will flicker again Nov. 10, and volunteers are needed to come help.

"There's about 10 of us here and we try to find a local group to help out, like the Scouts and other volunteers," said Kent Knudson, location manager of Debo Funeral Home and Callaway Memorial Gardens.

Help is needed to place about 3,500 luminary bags on each grave. The ceremony was moved up this year to just after Daylight Saving Time ends and before Veterans Day on Nov. 11, hoping it might not be cold outside as in the past.

Early in the morning, coffee, cocoa and doughnuts will be available. Volunteers will start placing the luminaries at 9 a.m.

"We have two big wagons with about 1,700 luminaries in each, and we just roll through the cemetery and put one at every headstone," Knudson said.

That takes about an hour, he added. The group will reconvene at 3 p.m. at the Mausoleum Chapel for a prayer and ceremony led by Pastor Bruce Williamson.

"Then we'll take about 100 lighters and take off walking, and every (luminary) will be lit," Knudson said. "That also takes about an hour."

There will be hot drinks at that event, too.

"It's sort of an all-day event with a long break in the middle," he added.

At dusk, the entire cemetery will be washed in candle light. Knudson said the cemetery also will be filled with flags.

"It's really a beautiful thing," he said. "Every year, I think about it. We do it for the community and the families of people who have been buried there."
