Two arrested after meth discovered

Fulton police arrested two people Monday after receiving a report of drugs at a local hotel.

Major Roger Rice said he was not comfortable releasing the name of the hotel.

Police obtained a search warrant for the guest room where they found two glass smoking devices used for methamphetamine, and a plastic container with a crystal-like substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine. The container and methamphetamine weighed approximately 308 grams.

The occupants of the room were located via a traffic stop and were taken into custody. The driver was identified as Courtney Marie Pape, 28, and an occupant, Dylan Kane Nelson, 18, both of Columbia.

Inside the vehicle, officers located digital scales, glass smoking pipes and a bag containing a crystal substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine. The bag of methamphetamine weighed approximately 5 grams.

Rice said drug activity can happen at any hotel, but there are a few things people can do to try to protect themselves.

"You always want to use a hotel that's got a good reputation," he said. "I always look them up online and see if they have a good rating. I always want to pick one with a four or a five."

That doesn't always mean there won't be criminal activity, however, Rice said. He checked into a name-brand hotel once and drug deals were going on in the rooms next to him.

"I slept with my gun under my pillow," he said.

The best thing is to be keenly aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.

"You can kind of tell when you check in," Rice added. "I always pay the extra money to go into a good hotel."

Pape was taken to the Callaway County Jail for the charges of first-degree felony drug trafficking, felony distribution of drugs and possession of paraphernalia. Pape was issued a no-bond hold to be set by the judge. Pape also had two warrants for her arrest with a total bond of $2,000.

A warrant for Nelson's arrest was also discovered and he was taken into custody with a court-set bond of $1,000.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Office assisted the Fulton Police Department with the detention and arrest of the subjects.
