Filing ends Tuesday for August primary

As is standard practice before elections within the county, officials from the Cole County Clerk's office, along with one member each of the Republican and Democrat parties, ran a test in July 2017 on four optical voting machines to be used in an Aug. 8 special election. Roy Beal is shown feeding test ballots into the machines while Karen Simpson retrieves the sample ballots.

Tuesday at 5 p.m. is the deadline for Missourians to file as political candidates for federal, state and county offices to be chosen in the Aug. 7 primary election and, ultimately, in the Nov. 6 general election.

Independent candidates have until the end of July to submit their petitions to the secretary of state's office for federal and state races.

Filing began Feb. 27, with all candidates who filed on the first day drawing numbers for their position on the ballot. All other candidates' names appear on the ballot in the order they filed.

The ballots will include two statewide contests - for U.S. Senator and state auditor - as well as congressional districts, state Senate seats and all state House seats.

In many areas, circuit judges - who are considered state offices and file with the secretary of state - also are on the ballot, including four circuits in Mid-Missouri.

As of Friday evening, the candidates who filed with the secretary of state for federal and state offices appearing on Mid-Missouri ballots were:
