A Portland man was arrested and charged Friday for burglary, vehicle thefts and possession of meth, Callaway County Sheriff Clay Chism said.

Chad Ashley, 45, who lives at Paradise Lake, was charged by the Callaway County prosecuting attorney with the felony offenses of burglary (two counts), stealing, tampering with a motor vehicle, and possession of a controlled substance. Ashley remains in the Callaway County Jail pending a court-set bond of $22,500.

These charges are the result of several investigations conducted by sheriff's office personnel in the Portland area spanning the past few weeks. Those investigations included resident burglary and vehicle theft offenses in the Paradise Lake area.

Several deputies searched Paradise Lake for Ashley on Thursday morning when they spotted Ashley on foot and took him into custody. At the time of Ashley's arrest, he was found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

The investigations continue and further charges could be forthcoming.

Also last week, state troopers arrested a Sewell, New Jersey, man. Garry E. Moore, 31, was charged Thursday with possession of fewer than 10 grams of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Troopers reported no major accidents this week in Callaway County.
