Carrington Pits, a state recreation site southwest of Fulton, will close for the season Oct. 1.

Because of staffing levels and continued vandalism, the Mark Twain National Forest will be closing the gate to the Carrington Pits recreation site slightly earlier than normal, and will open it again May 1. All services to the location will be discontinued until the next open season in May.

During this closure time period, anyone walking into the area is asked to please pack out anything they pack in. The area is off County Road 315 and 317 with four picnic sites, and features abandoned coal mining pits, about 4 acres of water, two accessible fishing piers and a gravel boat ramp, and a vault restroom.
