Parks-Rec offering self-defense classes

Even in quiet Callaway County, it's still wise to know how to defend yourself.

The Fulton Parks and Recreation department will offer a series of four self-defense classes during on Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The series costs $20 and is limited to 35 participants. The classes willbe held at the Fulton Recreation Building, 516 Market St.

"In the past, we've done a women's self-defense class and we've usually had a decent turnout," Sharlene McArtor, assistant director of Fulton Parks and Recreation, said. "This is the first time we've offered a co-ed opportunity."

The class is open to both men and women, ages 13 and older. McArtor pointed out young people, including young men, are especially vulnerable.

Participants will learn how to defend themselves against attackers, break out of someone's grasp, avoid being tackled and escape from being pinned on the ground.

"You learn different skills during each of the classes, so you'll want to make sure you can attend all of them," McArtor said.

The class will be taught by Robert Knight, a jiu jitsu and self-defense instructor, who led the class previously for the Parks and Recreation department.

"He doesn't just go over mechanics of defense, but covers being aware of your surroundings and making yourself knowledgeable about the positions you're putting yourself in," McArtor said. "I'd recommend it because it makes you more aware of your surroundings."
