Jefferson City police are warning local businesses of a possible increase in circulation of counterfeit $100 bills, as well as warning residents they may unknowingly have fake $100 bills in their possession.

At approximately 9:15 a.m. Sunday morning officers responded to a traffic hazard at Missouri Boulevard and U.S. 50 West after an unidentified person discarded a large number of fake $100 bills onto the roadway, according to police reports.

Prior to officers arriving on the scene, motorists had stopped in the roadway to pick up the fake bills. Although officers collected numerous counterfeit bills, all of which have identical serial numbers and pink Asian script on the front, it is unknown how many bills were picked up by passing motorists.
