Jail inmate reportedly assaults corrections officer

An inmate attacked and injured a corrections officer in a disturbance reported at 8:35 p.m. Wednesday at the Callaway County Jail, according to Sheriff Clay Chism.

The name of the 19-year-old inmate was not released. The investigation is ongoing, and upon completion, investigative reports will be submitted to the Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney.

Chism said deputies and Fulton Police officers responded and determined the inmate, currently held on charges involving weapons and trespassing offenses, attacked the corrections officer. The attack was unprovoked, Chism added.

The corrections officer, a veteran of the agency, was injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. The corrections officer was later released from the hospital and is unable to return to normal duty at this time.

The inmate will likely face additional charges regarding this incident.
