Cloud rotation cited for sirens Monday

A reported cloud rotation was to blame for Monday's blaring sirens in Fulton, according to Sheriff Clay Chism.

The sirens went off briefly at around 8:30 p.m.

"For clarification, the Callaway County Sheriff's Office has no control over tornado sirens," Chism said.

He went on to explain the tornado warning sirens are triggered by the Callaway County Emergency Operations Center. On Monday, they were sounded because a certified weather spotter in Fulton and law enforcement officers from two different agencies spotted possible cloud rotation.

Rotation is sometimes a warning sign of a tornado forming.

"By standard procedure, this information was forwarded to the Emergency Operations Center/Joint Communications Center," Chism said. "They have direct contact with the National Weather Service and ultimately make the determination as to whether the warning sirens should be activated."

The National Weather Service did not issue any tornado warnings Monday for the Callaway County area.
