Boil advisory issued for customers south of Holts Summit

HOLTS SUMMIT A leaky water main has caused a boil advisory for about 85 customers south of Holts Summit.

"We had a leak in one of the mains and had to shut it down," Callaway County Water District Manager Brad Scrivner said.

The impacted area starts about a half-mile south of the Holts Summit city limits at the intersection of County Roads 4037 and 4042, Scrivner said, and continues south along CR 4037.

Other areas under the boil advisory include customers on CR 4030, Masssey Lane, Fox Fire Lane, CR 4032, Hickory Nut Lane and CR 4043.

The boil advisory in place for those customers is standard procedure after shutting off a water main, Scrivner said.

"The water has not tested 'bad,' it is just untested," he said. "I just dropped samples off at the health lab, and I should have the results in 24 hours. If the results come back negative, we will institute a 'boil order,' if they come back fine, we will lift the boil advisory."

According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources website, three main steps need to be taken during a boil advisory/order:

Boil water vigorously for three minutes prior to drinking, diluting fruit juices, all other food preparation or brushing teeth.

Ice cubes should be thrown out and remade with boiled water. Ice cubes from automatic ice makers should not be used.

Dishes and any other surface that food comes into contact with should be disinfected by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water containing one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

Water used for bathing does not usually need to be boiled, but care should be taken to avoid ingestion of that water, according to the DNR website.
