Fourth of July in Callaway County means scorching hot temperatures, fireworks and, of course, the sixth annual Independence Day Parade.

This year, the parade will depart at 11 a.m., tracing a route between the south gate of William Woods at 12th Street to Memorial Park.

"Anyone that wants to be in the parade should gather (at the gate)," organizer Tom Maupin said.

That includes organizations, companies and individuals.

Cars and horses are allowed.

"There will be a trailer for veterans," said Maupin, who is the quartermaster at VFW Post 2657 in Fulton.

In the past few years, the parade has focused on honoring veterans. But this year, the theme's getting changed up a bit.

"We ran out of wars," he said with a chuckle. "This year, we're honoring all of the first responders in the county."

He said the Callaway Cruisers and a motorcycle club from Columbia are likely to participate.

Maupin explained why the celebration is so young in Fulton.

"The local Lions Club had its big Fourth of July celebration back when I was a kid, out at Reeds Lake," Maupin said. "After that died out, it never started up again."

Maupin, David Beaver and City Councilman Steve Moore managed to relaunch the parade.

"It's grown every year since then," he said.
