The Missouri State Lottery Commission received an overall performance rating of "good" in a regularly scheduled state audit released by Auditor Nicole Galloway Monday.

State law requires an audit of the lottery once every two years, according to a news release from Galloway's office.

"I commend the Lottery Commission for the efforts they have made to correct concerns found in previous audits," Galloway said in the news release. "Officials have already addressed issues identified in this report to improve the transparency of lottery operations and ensure expenses are fully disclosed to the public."

The audit noted one concern with a lack of transparency regarding travel expenses.

The report identified a concern with a lack of transparency of some travel costs, as some costs - including $50,000 for flights and conference fees over two years - were paid for by a contractor and not included in financial statements, according to Galloway's news release.

The auditor's report notes a similar concern was noted following the lottery commission's previous audit. The commission notes in its response that it has amended the contract in question.

The audit looked specifically at the state lottery commission's internal controls, compliance with legal provisions, and management practices.

A "good" audit rating indicates the audit found few concerns and the entity is managed well. The only better rating possible is "excellent," which indicates an audit found no concerns.
