Attendees at today's meeting at the Callaway County courthouse will address the building's security policy, according to Presiding Commissioner Gary Jungermann.

"We just feel like we can't wait until someone gets hurt or worse," he said.

Courthouse visitors may have noticed the security station set up in the middle of the lobby floor, which includes a machine to scan items such as purses. Jungermann said it will soon be up and running and will be used every day the courthouse is open. Anyone entering the building will have to pass the security checkpoint.

"Things are going to change in Callaway County," Jungermann said, mentioning current political turmoil at the national level. "We've never had an issue here, but if you wait until there is one, people will say, 'Well, you waited too long.'"

While the basics of the policy are already settled, some details still need to be worked out, Jungermann said. The policy likely will be adjusted once the security station is in use.

Today's 3 p.m. meeting will take place downstairs at the courthouse and will include law enforcement and the prosecuting attorney.
