As preparations are being made for the sixth annual Our House Holiday Gathering, homelessness is on the rise.

According to Executive Director Brad Sheppard, the organization's Wiley House has already surpassed all previous years' total number of bednights with 3,100 and counting. The Department of Housing and Urban Development reported this week the first increase in homelessness nationwide since 2010.

"Unfortunately, homelessness is not soon to be eliminated," Sheppard said. "But, fortunately here in Callaway County, safe and reliable shelter and services for the homeless exist."

Since 2000, Our House has sheltered and cared for the community's homeless, a majority of whom are from Callaway County. With rising numbers of homeless men, women and children, the organization's need for community support is urgent.

Our House invites all to participate in the organization's holiday gathering from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Beks in Fulton. A silent auction will be offered with about 60 items up for bid. These items include arts, crafts, home decor and certificates from local businesses. Other items include handmade quilts, woodworking, University of Missouri men's basketball tickets and a week at a condo in Colorado near golfing and skiing.

Also, there is another chance to win $500. The popular Brick District Basket will also go home with someone after the event.

"We hope that everyone will give pause to consider how to help our homeless neighbors this holiday season," added Sheppard. "Any and all support is greatly appreciated."
