Even before its shadow reaches Fulton, the total solar eclipse is inspiring artists.

Locals and visitors alike can enjoy some of that art during during tonight's Light and Shadow Gallery Hop. The Art House and William Woods University's Mildred M. Cox Gallery are both having opening receptions this evening. Attendance is free.

The Mildred M. Cox gallery opened Tuesday and will run until Aug. 25, and its reception tonight runs from 6-8 p.m. Nicole Petrescu, gallery coordinator, has said about 50-100 pieces are expected to be on display. They'll come from artists all over the country.

The Art House's gallery opened Aug. 8 and will be on display until Sept. 23 in the Brick District. Its opening reception begins at 5 p.m. tonight and closes at 7 p.m.

Danielle Warren, the gallery manager, promises a good spread of snacks, music and wine.

She said so far there are about 70 Light and Shadow submissions on the walls.

"Pieces are still trickling in," she said.

The gallery emphasizes local artists, both amateur and experienced.

"There are quite a few professional artists and a handful or more amateurs," Warren said. "There are a few people I know haven't submitted art before."

Warren added the artists' approaches to the Light and Shadow theme have varied.

"There's people who literally did studies of the sun, moon or an eclipse," she said. "Some did examples of extreme light and shadow in other contexts. Others did, say, a landscape that incidentally has some shadows."
