Fulton area youngsters take off for the start of the 2016 Super Sam 5K event.

Even if you're not faster than a speeding bullet, you can still be a hero and join the SuperHero 5K this Saturday at Memorial Park in Fulton.

Check-in is at 8 a.m. The mile-long fun run begins at 8:30 a.m., while the 5K starts at 9:15 a.m.

"It's a fun day for all ages, and knowing that you're helping people is great," said Kelly Nickelson, a Super Sam Foundation board member.

This is the third Superhero 5K. As with previous years, it promises to be family-friendly and colorful.
Costumes are encouraged, and kids who participate in the fun run (open to ages 10 and under) will receive a Super Sam cape and mask or special hero socks.

"We have a member of our group that dresses up as Mrs. Incredible, and I think that's (among my favorites,)" Nickelson said. "But my favorite is all their kids and their capes, when they take off running."

Race registration is available at bit.ly/2pw05AN. Fees are $25 for the 5K and $15 for the kids' mile.

"The fees help support our mission of supporting kids and their families who are fighting cancer, and funding research," Nickelson said. "We gave our first $25,000 research grant last year, and there's an announcement coming soon about our next one."

More than 150 people have registered so far, she said, already more than in past years.

"This event is typically rain or shine, but in the case of severe weather we may need to reschedule for the safety of all involved," Nickelson said.
