A permanent liquor license has been approved for the Callaway Arts Council for use at special events at the Brick District Playhouse.

On Tuesday evening, members of the Fulton City Council approved the license after a request was made by Debbie LaRue, representing the Brick District organization. Consent had previously been obtained by two nearby churches, she said.

This approval will allow persons using the Playhouse for special events, such as weddings, receptions, plays and concerts, to serve alcoholic beverages, LaRue said. One such event, patterned after a USO Review, will be offered on July 1, during which the new Playhouse sign will be lit by Mayor Leroy D. Benton. Court Street will be closed for this celebration.

The city council also discussed revisions to the current right-of-way permit rules, requiring commercial-type businesses to obtain a special permit when large jobs are being performed. These permits will be required for projects done by businesses such as AT&T, Socket and Charter when doing large jobs, and would not affect single homeowners per se, according to Kyle Bruemmer, interim city engineer.

"What is the penalty if they don't get a permit?" asked council member Mike West.

Replied Bruemmer: "Right now the penalty is we shut your job down until you do get a permit."

City council members also discussed road and sidewalk improvements and passed two annexations for property into city limits.

They also talked about plans for a sale of city surplus items, scheduled for 9 a.m. June 11 at an old city warehouse, and an open house 3:30 to 6 p.m. June 14 introducing a new warehouse complex with a 4:30 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.
