Paint it purple

Events planned for 2016 Relay for Life

Local Relay for Life officials want to paint Callaway County purple - the color of hope.

In order to bring awareness of cancer, its effects and upcoming Relay events, all businesses in the county may participate in this May 23 to June 5 event, according to Linda Boshers, event leader for the Relay for Life of Callaway County.

"We're inviting all businesses to decorate their storefronts with purple, or inside their stores, however they want to do it," Boshers said. "Then we'll come in and take pictures."

The photographs will be posted on the organization's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/callawayrelayforlife/photos. Whatever business gets the most "likes" wins, Boshers added.

"There will be one winner from each community," she said. "It looks like it will be bigger than last year."

Businesses interested in participating may contact Boshers at [email protected] or email Caitlin Wentworth, Paint the County Purple chairperson, at [email protected].

The deadline is May 18, and decorations should be up by May 23. Winners will be announced at 6 p.m. June 1 in front of RCW Gifts and Tack, 517 Court St., Fulton.

The Relay For Life of Callaway County will be noon-midnight June 4 at Callaway Electric Cooperative. There will be food, contests and games along with traditional Relay activities.

"I've been relaying since 1995, since I was first diagnosed with cancer," Boshers said of her interest in the nationwide movement.

"Our goal is $47,000," Boshers said of the funds raised for the American Cancer Society. "Now we're at $32,884.07, so we're at 70 percent of our goal already."
