The Missouri State Museum in the Capitol is one stop in this year's Passport Jefferson City program.

After a scavenger hunt through the Runge Nature Center, Passport Jefferson City holders earn their stamp.

It's one of 11 stops on the first-time activity, which runs through Sept. 5.

"Usually, they're excited because they got to see a new place," said spokesman Kathy Cavender.

About one month into the passport season, the local sites have been pleased with the amount of participation.

"I definitely think we've gotten people in who haven't been here but heard about us through the passport program," Cavender said.

Both Mid-Missouri residents and out-of-towners have taken advantage of the project. Even employees at the featured sites are taking the passport challenge, like staff and volunteers from the Runge, Cavender said.

"People will be surprised at what's in our own backyard," she said of Mid-Missourians, particularly. "We take everything close to us for granted; this is a great opportunity to see what's in Jefferson City."

In less than a month, more than 280 passport users have visited Runge, she said.

Interactive activities, such as scavenger hunts or tours, are available at each location.

At most sites, passport guests receive a gift, as well. At the Runge, it's a flashlight or reusable grocery bag. Or, at the Missouri State Museum, visitors may sign up for a $75 YoYums gift certificate, sponsored by the Friends of the State Museum.

Participating locations include the Lincoln University Cooperative Extension's Farmers Market and Native Plants Program, the Missouri Farm Bureau Log Home, Missouri State Archive, Missouri Highway Patrol Safety and Education Center, Missouri State Penitentiary Museum, Missouri River Regional Library, Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation Museum, Museum of Missouri Military History and Runge Conservation Nature Center.

"We hope people enjoy this and we can do it again," Cavender said.

Passports and facility information are available online at each location's website.
