Fire department mutual aid on council agenda

Fulton officials will learn the results of a five-year initiative to save money at City Hall when they meet tonight.

On the agenda for the 6:30 p.m. meeting is Rick Nickelson of the firm EPM, which installed computerized temperature controls at City Hall more than five years ago.

"In the fifth year of operation, the utility savings is 41 percent, compared to the year before EPM's installation," he said.

Council members also will discuss a proposed addendum to the mutual aid agreement with the Callaway County Fire Protection District. Under this agreement, Fulton would receive an engine from CCFPD automatically if there is a reported structure fire in Fulton's city limits, and likewise, CCFPD would receive an engine from Fulton automatically under the same conditions.

"This addendum mutually strengthens the initial response to a reported structure fire in both jurisdictions," Fulton Fire Chief Todd Farley wrote in a recent memo to Bill Johnson, the city's director of administration.

He also said both departments averaged between 21 and 24 reported structure fires per year in a five-year study.

The mutual aid agreement also addresses both departments sending assistance to accidents and wrecks on U.S. Route 54, Farley said in the memo.

"The addition of an engine from either jurisdiction is to ensure enough personnel and extraction equipment is on the scene in a timely manner to provide for a rapid extrication of the patient," he said.

Council members also will plan an event to burn the mortgage for Tanglewood Golf Course. They plan to make their final payment on the project in July.

The meeting will be at City Hall, 18 E. Fourth St., Fulton.
