VFW helps raise funds for childhood cancer foundation

Fulton Veterans of Foreign Wars members hosted a fundraiser for the Super Sam Foundation on May 7 that raised more than $3,000 for kids with cancer.

The foundation supports families in the fight against childhood cancer, raises awareness and funds research, according to Cassie Santhuff, who founded Super Sam with her husband, Matt, in memory of her son, Sam.

With the support of dozens of local families and businesses, Charles Williams and the Fulton VFW put together a pork steak dinner and silent auction while hosting games and face painting for children.

"The day was full of fun, fellowship and delicious food - all for a good cause that has touched my heart," said Gloria Emanuel, supporter of the VFW and SSF.

Friend of the foundation Sam Dolman was dared to have his face painted, so he turned it into a fundraiser and raised $135 from fellow supporters.

"Charles Williams, Commander Larry Underwood and the Fulton VFW pulled out all this stops for this," Cassie Santhuff said. "We were beyond honored when Charles presented this idea, and while I know better than anyone how amazing our small town is, $3,300 blows me away. We are humbled and grateful for the support of SSF and our local VFW."

She said many community members stopped in, raving about the dinner, and said they wouldn't miss an opportunity to get VFW barbecue and support a second great cause at the same time.

The funds raised will go to help fund the foundation's first research grant this month. Every day, Santhuff said, 46 kids are diagnosed with cancer in America and seven lose their fight.

"These odds just aren't enough. Our kids deserve more," she said. "They are our future, the best of us. We need to give them a fighting chance. We couldn't do what we do without supporters like Charles and the VFW."
