The Fulton School District School Board meeting was highlighted by year-end updates.

The meeting began with the recognition of the Fulton High School baseball team which placed fourth in last week's state tournament.

"It was a very fun run," said Coach John Brinkmann. "It was a very special season for these guys."

Along with a stellar performance on the field, Brinkmann noted the Hornets were successful in the classroom.

"We were also academic all-state with a 3.67 team GPA," he said.

According to reports presented by Assistant Superintendent Suzanne Hull, test scores are up in the Fulton School District compared to last year.

"The scores look better all around," she said. "However, there's always room for improvement."

Compared to the previous year, MAP test scores for algebra II, English II and government increased by 5 percent. Algebra I scores showed the greatest improvement at 40 percent. Biology scores by 9 percent, following a state wide trend in drops on biology scores.

"There was a statewide biology drop," she said. "Some districts suffered as much as a 20 percent drop."

Beth Houf, principal of Fulton Middle School, spoke on the school's progress this school year, especially in attendance.

"We ended last year at 94.48 percent average daily attendance," she said. "We ended at 95.57 this year."

The school also made strides in involvement from parents.

"Ninety-six percent of parents made it to parent teacher conference," Houf said. "That was huge. To go from around 40 percent last year, that's huge."

In response to recent federal mandates, the board also reviewed a potential change in the district's policy towards the treatment of transgender students. The board motioned to move the vote to the next board meeting where they would have all members present. Todd Gray and Ruth Burt were not present Wednesday evening.
