Greenway Park faces a recycling overflow after Kingdom Project closing

The shuttering of Kingdom Projects Inc.'s recycling program left more than one city government scrambling for a replacement recycling provider.

As previously reported, Fulton plans on hauling residents' recyclables to Jefferson City for the time being. Holts Summit, however, is still trying to figure out an action plan.

"We are waiting to see who, if anyone, takes over the contracts that KPI has/had," a representative for the City of Holts Summit commented on the town's Facebook page.

KPI has hauled away the large recycling bins found in Holts Summit's Greenway Park, at a fee of $70 per trip. But with the operation set to cease soon, the city must make alternate plans.

"Possibly Callaway Recycling will be taking over - I'm not sure of that," City Administrator Rick Hess said on Tuesday.

Also unclear is whether the new contract will cost more money, and whether the city might have to introduce a fee to residents to cover increased costs.

"[We are] waiting to see whether they'll honor the contract as written or whether we'll be rewriting it, that's yet to be seen," Hess added.

In the meantime, the city is already having a recycling-related problem.

"Instead of taking recycling home when the bins are full and bringing it back in a few days, some people just dump it there right next to be the bin," Hess said.

The Holts Summit Facebook page mentioned the bins are currently overflowing and people are piling their excess on the ground in the park.

"KPI's going to come down and empty them out maybe one last time," Hess said.

He hopes that by the time the city is due to empty them again, there will be a new recycling contract in place.

"Hopefully it'll be a seamless transition right at the first of the year," he said.

If not, the city urges people not to dump their recycling on the ground and instead bring it back home.
