The Little Theatre will perform "It Runs in the Family" by Ray Cooney from Feb. 16-18 at the Miller Performing Arts Center, 501 Madison St.

The British farce centers on "Dr. David Mortimore, a doctor at a London hospital, (who) is about to give the most important speech of his life," director Laura Vedenhaupt said. "If he does well, he will earn a knighthood; however, if he fails, he can start looking for another job.

"Just before his speech, a nurse with whom he had an extramarital affair years ago shows up and tells him he has an illegitimate son. After telling a lie to avoid a scandal, Dr. Mortimore must come up with even more outrageous lies to cover his tracks."

Brian Harper portrays the stuffy physician with Greg Barnes playing the lead's best friend, Dr. Hubert Bonney, a kind and genial soul. Jane Tate, played by Jamie Waier, is Mortimore's former lover; and her son, Leslie, is played by Joe Schneider.

Vedenhaupt said Harper brings out both the "stuffy" and the "heart" of Mortimore. And Barnes is stretching himself as an actor to include song, dance and karate in his performance.

Megan Sappington and Don Otto provide solid supporting characters.

"These two have really brought out something special in their characters, and I am sure audiences will be howling with laughter at their antics," Vedenhaupt said.

The local cast will deliver the story with lots of plot twists and physical comedy.

"There are lots of belly laughs, as well as some truly heartfelt moments in the performances, I am sure the audiences will love," she said.

Tickets are $15. Show times are 7:30 p.m.
