Owls get swept by Park in AMC doubleheader

PARKVILLE, Mo. — The William Woods Owls were swept by the Park University Pirates in an American Midwest Conference doubleheader on Friday.

The Owls (25-22, 11-15 AMC) lost the first game 6-4 and dropped the second 5-2.

In the opener, William Woods scored the first run in the first inning and came up with two in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead. Park (26-19, 14-12) tallied three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-all. The Pirates took a 5-3 lead after scoring two runs in the fifth and both teams came up with a run in the sixth.

Senior first baseman Jordan Dey went 2-for-3 with a run batted in as the Owls collected eight hits. Sophomore left fielder Nolan Aherin was 2-for-3.

Junior Justin Landewee threw 2/3 innings of relief for senior starter Jacob Guilianelli to take the loss. Landewee gave up two earned runs on two hits, struck out one and walked one.

In the nightcap, the Pirates scored the first run in the third. William Woods tied the game after producing a run in the fourth. Park took a 5-1 lead after scoring one run in the sixth and three in the seventh. The Owls added a run in the ninth.

Junior designated hitter Jansen Smith was 1-for-4 with a double as William Woods totaled just three hits.

Senior starter John Cavness took the loss for the Owls. In six innings, Cavness gave up two runs — one earned — on seven hits, struck out four and walked two.

William Woods’ game at Park on Saturday was postponed due to rain. The Owls will compete in the AMC Tournament this week; their opponent will be determined.
