Hornets track and field team takes third at Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY CITY - Junior Jared Eliuk was victorious in the 400 meters with a time of 55.24 seconds to help spur the Fulton Hornets track and field team to a third-place finish in the season-opening Montgomery County practice meet Tuesday.

In the girls' division, sophomore Kate Pani came in second in both the 200 meters (:27.90) and long jump (14 feet, 8 1/2 inches) as the Lady Hornets took seventh overall.

Logging second-place finishes for the Fulton boys - who accumulated 89 points - were sophomores Mason Gaines in the 1,600 (5:01.45) and Gabe Luebbert in the 3,200 (11:40.19). Junior Tanner Steffen placed third in the 300 hurdles (:45.23) and fourth in the 110 hurdles (:17.48), while senior Luke Lohmeyer tied for third in the pole vault (9-0).

Sophomore L'trevion Kemp-Vaughn came in fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 38-10 1/4. Kemp-Vaughn was also part of the Hornets' 400 relay - along with sophomore Ammod Davis and freshmen Taeon Logan and Sam Schiltz - that took third in :50.12.

The 800 relay - comprised of Davis, Eliuk, Steffen and Schiltz - recorded a third-place finish in 1:42.10. Eliuk, Schiltz, Steffen and Logan teamed up in the 1,600 relay to come in third in 3:56.54.

Freshman Mollie Huff also came in second in the 800 (2:53.86) for the Lady Hornets, who ended up with 56 points. Senior Michaela Huff took third in the pole vault (7-0) and junior Sierra Bickell finished fourth in the 100 hurdles (:18.84).

Fulton's 800 relay of senior Rachel Guse', Bickell, Pani and sophomore Adrea Shadbolt placed second in 2:01.66. The 3,200 relay - consisting of sophomore Olivia Rice, Shadbolt, Mollie Huff and freshman Grace Lewis - came in fourth in 12:05.76.

Van-Far secured the boys' team title with 132 points, while Montgomery County wrapped up the girls' team championship with 136.

Fulton competes at the Fayette Relays at 4 p.m. Friday, April 1.
