Lady Blue Jays softball team splits doubleheader with Rhodes

Westminster College sophomore second baseman Kim Morrison's three-run double highlighted a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Lady Blue Jays downed Rhodes (Tennessee) College 7-4 on Tuesday at Blue Jay Field.

Westminster (7-5) was forced to split the non-conference doubleheader after the Lady Lynx used a 27-hit rampage to demolish the Lady Blue Jays 20-1 in five innings in the second game.

The Lady Blue Jays were down 3-2 going to the bottom of the sixth in the opener when junior catcher Alyssa Johnson tied the game with a one-out RBI single. Morrison then put Westminster in front to stay with her three-run double to center and she scored on sophomore center fielder Leah Holthaus' two-out single to make it 7-3.

Rhodes added its final run in the top of the seventh.

Morrison also delivered an RBI single in the second to finish 2-for-3 with four RBI as the Lady Blue Jays collected seven hits.

Senior Shannon Perrigo was credited with the win after working two innings in relief of junior starter Alyson Hahn. Perrigo (4-1) allowed an earned run on two hits, struck out one and walked one.

Westminster managed just three hits in the nightcap - doubles by sophomore right fielder Amelia Knipfel and junior shortstop Brittany Hodge, and a single by freshman center fielder Whitney Mitchhart. The Lady Blue Jays tallied their lone run in the third on freshman second baseman Taylor Sechler's RBI sacrifice fly in the third.

Freshman starter Maddie Coffin lasted just two innings in being tagged with the loss for Westminster. Coffin (0-2) was hammered for 12 runs - 11 earned - on 17 hits.

The Lady Blue Jays kick off their spring-break trip to San Diego with a doubleheader against Redlands at 4 p.m. Monday.
