Lawmen investigating string of burglaries

A March 4 burglary in Millersburg may be related to a series of thefts that have occurred in Boone County, and the Callaway County Sheriff's Department said they are working an ongoing joint investigation with the Boone County Sheriff's Department.

On March 8, officials in Boone County asked citizens to be extra vigilant as it investigates a rash of daytime, weekday burglaries in rural and semi-rural areas where the suspect(s) are primarily stealing jewelry. In multiple cases, entry to homes has been forced, many times through a rear door.

Since early January, Boone County sheriff's deputies have taken reports of residential burglaries on Route O, Route UU, Cedar Tree Lane, Highway NN, Low Crossing Road, Route B, Rolling Hills Road, Richland Road, Highway WW, Brushwood Lake Road and Country Woods Drive. Both county's officials believe many of these burglaries have been committed by the same suspect(s).

"I think people are more alert," said Jason Bedsworth, who owns the Short Stop in Millersburg, the hub of local activity in the small town. "But they aren't terribly concerned." Bedsworth said people in the community tend to look out for one another.

Investigations have led officers to believe they are looking for a blue or similar color Hyundai Sonata of an approximate model year of 2000. A witness indicated the vehicle had a loud exhaust.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Department is asking for anyone with information on these crimes to please call Fulton Crime Stoppers at 573-592-2427 or contact the department at www.callawaysheriff.org and click on the Crime Tips tab.
