Lady Owls softball team drops pair to Culver-Stockton

CANTON - The William Woods University Lady Owls softball team watched its losing streak increase to four games after combining for just nine hits in Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader sweep by the Culver-Stockton College Lady Wildcats.

William Woods lost the opener 2-1 and the second game 4-1.

Freshman first baseman Alli Massey went 2-for-3 as William Woods (8-9) finished with six hits in the first game. The Lady Owls, down 2-0, tallied their lone run in the top of the seventh inning. Massey led off with a double to left and was lifted for freshman pinch-runner Dacrie Depping, a Fulton graduate who eventually scored on junior pinch-hitter Hillary Hentges' one-out double to center.

Sophomore starter Allison Waskow suffered the complete-game loss for William Woods. Waskow allowed two runs - one earned - on five hits, struck out six and walked one.

The Lady Owls were limited to only three hits in the nightcap and scored their run in the sixth. Senior left fielder Sydnae Hatton - named the American Midwest Conference player of the week Monday - reached on an error, advanced to third on another error and raced home on junior center fielder Hannah Campbell's groundout to bring William Woods within 2-1.

Culver-Stockton College (6-4), though, clinched the victory by scoring a pair of runs in its half of the sixth.

Campbell, junior catcher Brailee Schulte and junior third baseman Madison McCormick were each 1-for-3 for the Lady Owls.

William Woods sophomore starter Bre Logan went the distance in taking the loss. Logan gave up four runs - three earned - on seven hits, struck out five and issued four walks.

The Lady Owls open AMC play with a home doubleheader against Williams Baptist (Arkansas) College starting at 2 p.m. Friday. William Woods then hosts Freed-Hardeman (Tennessee) University in a conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
