Harris-Stowe stops Lady Owls' two-game win streak

The William Woods University Lady Owls saw their two-game winning streak come to an end in Saturday's 78-70 American Midwest Conference loss to the Harris-Stowe State University Lady Hornets at Anderson Arena.

William Woods (15-7, 10-6 AMC) led 20-15 after the first quarter, but Harris-Stowe (11-11, 9-6) outscored the Lady Owls 24-18 in the second quarter to take a narrow 39-38 advantage into the break. The Lady Hornets maintained a 57-54 lead heading to the fourth quarter to split the season series with William Woods.

Senior forward Nia Lateju supplied 14 points to steer four players in double figures for the Lady Owls, who shot just 35 percent (23-of-65) as a team. Junior forward April Gebke tallied 13 points, senior guard Kendra Vernatti came up with 11 and senior guard Marissa Webb added 10.

Junior center Kennedy Volkart pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to spur William Woos to a 42-40 advantage on the boards.

Monae Riley produced a double-double with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds for Harris-Stowe, which shot 44 percent (27-of-61) from the field. Atlantis Sutton produced 15 points, Cierra Stanciel put up 11 and Angela Randall contributed 10.

William Woods travels to AMC opponent Hannibal-LaGrange University at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The Lady Owls overpowered the Lady Trojans 70-50 on Dec. 17 in Fulton.
