Westran whips Lady Wildcats in consolation semis at Sturgeon

STURGEON - Shooting difficulties continued to plague the No. 3 seed New Bloomfield Lady Wildcats in Wednesday night's 47-31 loss to the No. 7 Westran Lady Hornets in the consolation semifinals of the 32nd-annual Sturgeon Tournament.

New Bloomfield (12-6) found itself down 25-10 at halftime and trailed 33-16 going into the fourth quarter.

Sophomore guard Madi Craighead and junior guard Baylee Garrett scored six points apiece as the Lady Wildcats shot a sparse 29 percent as a team.

"We're shooting very poorly right now and it's carrying over to our defense," New Bloomfield head coach Brett Craighead said Thursday night. "It's hard to win games that way. We're in a bad funk."

Maddy Denslow directed the Lady Hornets with a game-high 18 points. Cory Burton connected on 9-of-14 free throws in finishing with 11 points.

The Lady Wildcats were coming off a 50-36 first-round loss to No. 6 seed Paris on Monday night. Madi Craighead put up a game-high 17 points as New Bloomfield shot a dismal 27 percent from the field.

Allison Moore guided the Lady Coyotes with 15 points.

The Lady Wildcats play No. 8 seed Salisbury for seventh place at 4:30 this afternoon.
