T-Birds bow out in consolation semis at Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN - Despite senior guard Manzell Payne's game-high 22 points, the No. 6 seed North Callaway Thunderbirds lost to the No. 7 seed Winfield Warriors 67-53 in the consolation semifinals of the 91st-annual Bowling Green Tournament on Thursday night.

North Callaway (2-14) fell behind 14-9 after one quarter and went into halftime trailing 34-18. Winfield (2-13) outscored the Thunderbirds 18-12 in the third quarter to extend its lead to 52-30.

"If we would have played the first 19 minutes like we did the last five, we would have won the game," North Callaway head coach Matt Thomas said.

Sophomore guard Coy Danison tallied 15 points for the Thunderbirds.

Carter Bauer directed the Warriors with 17 points, Chase Bauer added 13 and Jake Freeman contributed 11.

North Callaway will play a makeup game against Missouri Military Academy at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Mexico. The varsity game will be played first.
