T-Birds succumb to Clopton again in first round

BOWLING GREEN - The No. 6 seed North Callaway Thunderbirds bowed to the No. 3 Clopton Hawks for the second time in four nights in a 42-27 first-round loss at the 91st-annual Bowling Green Tournament on Tuesday night.

North Callaway (2-13) also suffered a 59-28 Eastern Missouri Conference loss to Clopton last Friday night in Kingdom City.

Clopton (11-4) led 11-8 after the first quarter Tuesday night and went into halftime with a 22-14 advantage. The Hawks owned a 31-21 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Senior guard Manzell Payne directed the Thunderbirds with a game-high 11 points, while sophomore guard Coy Danison and sophomore forward Adam Reno added five apiece.

Alek Eivins led the Hawks with nine points.

North Callaways plays No. 2 seed Louisiana in the consolation-bracket semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday in the middle school gym.
