JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A ban on lobbyist gifts to Missouri lawmakers and other elected officials has passed the House.
The measure passed 147-12. It now goes to the Senate for review.
Lawmakers and other officials now can take unlimited gifts from lobbyists. The bill by Republican Rep. Justin Alferman would bar the practice.
Lobbyists still could pay for events if all legislators and state elected officials are invited in writing. Plaques and awards would be capped at $50.
Critics of the measure say lobbyists and lawmakers could find loopholes. Others are calling for campaign contribution limits.
The legislation is one of several proposals aimed at changing the state's loose ethics laws. Jefferson City fell under national scrutiny after the resignations of two lawmakers last year who were accused of inappropriate behavior toward interns.
